Botany: 14 genera; 500 species; herbs, shrubs; cosmopolitan.
TaxonomyMontiaceae sensu Nyffeler & Eggli, 2010. Most members of Montiaceae were formerly placed in Portulacaceae. Portulacaeae recently had only Portulaca included. Later it is fused with Didieraceae.
Plant theoryIn the Plant theory Montiaceae is treated as a separate family in Portulacales. It is placed in Subphase 3 for there is confirmation form cases.

BotanyFlowers:sessile or pedicellate, usually bisexual, actinomorphic.
Sepals: 2–9, often dry and persistent in fruit.
Petals: 4–5 or up to 19 (Lewisia), usually free but sometimes basally connate.
Stamens: as many as petals or numerous (to 100).
Ovary: superior, 1-locular with 2–8 united carpels
Fruit: 2–3-valved capsules, valves persistent (rarely deciduous) or basally circumscissile, or 1-seeded utricles, dehiscent or not, or 1–2-seeded indehiscent capsules disintegrating with time, sometimes with deciduous calyptra.
Seed: often minutely papillate, with strophiole or elaiosome.
