This plant is found in gravelly or sandy river valleys. The family type contracts into stalky growth, with the seed process moving from small, rather insignificant greenish white flowers into fruits hard as stone and more mineral in nature. The leaves are rich in tannins and have been used in tea substitutes, the hard-as-stone seeds, rich in calcium as well as silica, to treat kidney stones
