Family
Clades: Dothideomycetes, Ascomycota, Fungi, Plants
English: Sooty mold fungi.
Families: Antennulariellaceae, Capnodiaceae, Coccodiniaceae, Davidiellaceae, Euantennariaceae, Metacapnodiaceae, Mycosphaerellaceae, Piedraiaceae, Teratosphaeriaceae.
Mycology: grow as epiphytes, forming masses of black cells on plant leaves;often associated with the honeydew secreted by insects feeding on plant sap.
TaxonomyCapnodiales orginally consisted of epiphytic Capnodiaceae. Later several families formerly thought unrelated were added. The order now also includes saprobes, endophytes, plant pathogens, lichens and rock-inhabiting fungi. The genus Mycosphaerella is causing several economically important crop and tree diseases. Few fungi can parasitise humans and animals. Piedraia hortae is able to colonise human hair shafts.
