Region: Central America and western North America, British Columbia to Guatemala.
TaxonomyBrodiaeoideae is monophyletic. It is probably sister to Scilloideae.
Genera: 12 genera: Triteleia, with 15 species, and Brodiaea, with 14.
Botany: perennial herbs; starchy corm, forming a new corm each year; leaves linear, fleshy, closed sheath at their base; inflorescence umbel, rarely single, at the apex of a solitary scape; flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, tepals all similar, in 2 whorls of 3; stamens 6 fertile, or 3 alternating with 3 staminodes, inserted on tepals; anthers basifixed and introrse; ovary superior, trilocular; fruit a loculicidal capsule; seed covered with phytomelan.
