Region: east Asia, China, Japan, Indian subcontinent, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, New Guinea, Australia, Pacific Islands; cultivated in India.
Habitat: open coastal areas, along the beach, in mangroves, along tidal rivers; along rivers, in swamps further inland; favouring sandy soils, but also found on clays; elevations up to 100 metres; prefers sunny position; tolerating all the salty water sprays.
Content: an amorphous bitter principle, resin, gum.
Use: control erosion, covering, stabilizing sand dunes; hedge plant in India; Use as a medicine; ornamental, hedge.
BotanyShrub; up to 3 metres tall; evergreen; growth dense, rather straggly; climbing habit with twines, stems up to 13 metres long, up to 6cm in diameter.
