Habitat: cool temperate; wet pastures, scrub and woods in mountain districts, especially near streams; heavy, wet, moist, heavy, basic, deep, rich, clay soils; prefers shade, succeeds in sun or partial shade.
Ecology: poisonous to cattle and other livestock; food for larvae of some Lepidoptera, silver-ground carpet; immune to the predations of rabbits; greedy plant, inhibiting the growth of plants, especially legumes.
Use: ornamental, in bog gardens; medicinal.
