Habitat: coastal sage scrub, chaparral habitats; altitude below 1,000 metres
BotanyShrub, erect shrub; about 2 metres.
Stem: gray-barked branches, bright red when young.
Leaves: stiff, leathery, yellowish-green, opposite or clustered, often in threes, may be rolled lengthwise.
Flowers: staminate and pistillate, red-yellow structures; blooms in April and May.
Fruits: 4 lobed, bright red when ripe.
