BotanyHerb; small; aquatic plants, free-floating thalli; smooth, round; thalli 1 cm, larger than Lemna; connected to each other; overwinter as turions, a dormant form sinking to the bottom of the pond, accumulate more than 60% starch in dry mass; rapid growth often forms floating mats with related Lemna and Wolffia.
Roots: multiple, 7 to 12.
Leaves: green, red or brown underside.
Inflorescence: pouch with male and female flowers.
DNA: mallest genome size.
