Leaves: opposite or spiral; at most small stipules.
Flowers: small, in terminal inflorescences; free sepals and petals; anthers have thick filaments. Fruit: a berry, fleshy; contains two seeds.
TaxonomyIn the 2009 APG III system, the genus is placed in the family Paracryphiaceae, along with Paracryphia and Quintinia. The earlier APG II system placed it alone in family Sphenostemonaceae.
