Region: southwestern United States, northern and central Mexico.
Botany: perennial; tuberous roots; stems stiff, erect, up to 30 cm tall; leaves needle-like, round in cross-section, ± 3 cm long; flowers orange, copper or bronze, ± 2 cm across; seeds black, with a row of small bumps along one side.
