Region: Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, New Guinea.
Habitat: understorey tree; in primary and secondary lowland forest, on steep hills, especially ridges, on river banks; in open locations; on various soils; elevations up to 800 m.
Content: alkaloids, phaeanthine, kalimatine, phaeantharine.
Use: medicine; source of materials, light construction for houses; bark for tying purposes.
BotanyShrub or tree; evergreen; 12 to 20 meter tall; extreme different forms.
Stem: up to 35 cm in diameter; wood yellow to white.
Flowers: smell is sweet, apple-like; flowering all year round.
Pollination: by flies, beetles.
Fruit: all year round.
