Region: widespread pantropical; Africa, Asia, Pacific Islands, Neotropics; Azores, formerly on Madeira; introduced in Portugal, Sicily, Malta.
Habitat: at higher elevations; subtropical mountains; favors bog environments.

Leaves: leafy uprights; up to 2.5 m tall.
TaxonomyThe genus Palhinhaea is accepted in the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 (PPG I). Other classifications submerge the genus in Lycopodiella.
