Region: subarctic America, Northwestern USA, Yukon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington.
Habitat: wet meadows, stream banks, bogs, seepage areas, wet cliffs and talus slopes, heathlands; altitude 0 to 2300 m.
Content: A proanthocyanidin, prodelphinidin, procyanidin.
BotanyLeaves: dull, pale green abaxially, shiny, dark green adaxially; leathery; ± 8 by 3 cm.
Inflorescence: pedunculate, 1 to 12 cm, glandular to stipitate-glandular, proximal branches sometimes remote, especially in fruit; bracts sometimes subtending pedicels, scalelike.
Flowers: hypanthium shallowly campanulate; 0.5 by 10 mm; glandular to stipitate-glandular; flowering Jue to September.
Sepals: triangular to ovate; ± 1 by 1 mm; margins entire; apex rounded or retuse, glabrous or sparsely stipitate-glandular;
Petals: narrowly spatulate or oblanceolate; ± 2 by 0.5 mm; margins entire.
Stamens: exserted; filaments 0.8 to 1.5 mm; anthers 1 locula; round to transversely elliptic; ± 0.2 by 0.3 mm; dehiscent by broad, terminal openings.
Gynoecium: pistils ± 3 by 2 mm; styles slightly spreading, cylindric.
Fruit: capsules; erect; green, red, or purple; narrowly ovoid; tips divergent, 6-9 mm.
Seeds: 80-120; ± 4 by 0.5 mm; ends tapered.
