Region: tropical Africa, Senegal to Eritrea and Somalia, South Africa, Madagascar.
Habitat: secondary, fringing, savannah forest; on river-banks, old cultivation sites; tropical and subtropical open woodland, open Brachystegia woodland, grassland; elevations from 700 to 1540 metres; well-drained soil, growing well in full sun; regenerates and flowers after fire.
Use: edible fruit; medicinal; essential oil for perfumery, vanilla like; hedges, boundary markers; tender young leaves, with aromatic flavour, cooked, as a vegetable; wood for fuel.
BotanyShrub; erect or scrambling; perennial; up to 4 metres tall.
Leaves: strong unpleasant scent, repelling bees
Fruit: bright yellow; rounded, ribbed berry; 6mm across; with roughened nutlets-coloured; soft, very sweet, tasty pulp.
