Region: east Asia, southern China, Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam.
Habitat: thickets and forests, at stream sides; mountain slopes; hills, or in valleys and fields at elevations of 10 - 1,500 metres; warm temperate climates, tropical; well-drained soil, acidic pH 6 - 7, rich in organic matter; sunny position.
Content: beta-sitostero; nonakosane; mannit; seeds palmitic, oleic, linoleic acid; styrene acetate; carotenoid pigment.
Use: perfumery; ornamental; for hedge and windbreaks; flowers for scenting tea, eaten as a delicacy, pickled or preserved in honey; fruit in China and Japan for colouring food yellow, boiled beans, fish eggs, hot cakes, liquor, sweet, ices, noodles, candie, imitation crab; colouring textiles impermanently yellow or scarlet.
BotanyAn evergreen shrub or small tree, up to 12 metres tall, usually much shorter.
Flowers: heavily fragrant, long period of the year.
