Genus: 1 species.
Region: Australasia, Papua New Guinea and surrounding islands, Bougainville; introduced in Vanuatu, New Hebrides.
Habitat: sub-canopy tree; primary and secondary forests; drier areas in swamp forest; elevations up to 1800 metres.
Use: edible seeds, raw or cooked, pleasantly flavoured kernel; attractive ornamental.
BotanyTree; 5 to 25 to 36 metres tall.
Stem: straight, cylindrical; free of branches for up to 11 metres; around 15 to 35cm in diameter; sometimes with buttresses up to 1 metre high, often raised on stilt-roots.
Inflorescence: bright golden-yellow racemes.
Fruit: containing two seeds.
Seed: more than 10 mm in diameter.
