Region: South America, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile, western Argentina.
Habitat: Puna grasslands of the Andes; altitudes between 3,200 and 5,200 metres; sandy, well-drained soils; tolerant of poor soils, acidic, neutral, or basic, high insolation.
BotanyEvergreen perennial; estimated to grow 1.5 centimetres per year; many are estimated to be over 3,000 years old.
Leaves: extremely compact, dense mat, near the ground
Flowers: pink or lavender; self-fertile, hermaphroditic.
Pollination: by insects.
