Region: Central and South America; naturalized in southern Florida.
Habitat: tropical; prefer limestone-based soils; elevations below 50 m.
Ecology: larval foodplant for Battus polydamas, Battus laodamas, Parides sesostris and Parides iphidamas
BotanyHerb; large, woody vine; up to 20 m high; twining over other plants.
Leaves: simple; oblong; base truncate, sometimes cordate to cuneate.
Flowers: brownish-purple; flowers in mass at the base of the plant, which never set fruit.
