Habitat: atlantic coastal forest, disturbed mato do cipo, savannah, montane savannah; elevation to 1100 metres; mainly lowland tropical areas; open and disturbed areas.
Use: bark for medicine; tree for recovery of degraded areas; gum, like Arabic gum, for adding lustre to crape and silk, thickening colours, calico printing, manufacturing ink, as a mucilage; seedpods for tannins; wood ashes for potash, making soap; white wood for general construction.
