Fabales
Year 2025, Issue 8, Article 1EditorialAuthor: Jan Scholten
Editorial 2025.08This issue of the Qjure Journal is about the Fabales.
The subdivision of the Fabales has been changed since the start of the Plant theory in Wonderful Plants.
Surianaceae, with 5 genera, and Quillajaceeae with the single Quillaja, have been included in Polygalaceae. Polygalaceae has shown strong aspects of Phase 1.
Krameriaceae, with the single genus Krameria, has been included din Zygophyllaceae. Zygophyllaceae has been shifted to Subphase 7. In this edition there is a nice case of Tribulus terrestris that shows the Phase 7 qualities strongly.
Due to the above the Subphase 2 and Subphase 6 became empty. This showed the need for a new analysis of the classification of the main family Fabaceae. The biggest subfamily Papilionoideae was further split in 3 families: Galegoideae, Phaseoloideae and Genistioideae. This lead to the following classification:Subphases
1. Polygalaceae, including Suraniaceae, Quillajaceae; monophyletic.
2. Galegoideae: subfamily of Papillonioideae; monophyletic.
3. Phaseoloideae: subfamily of Papillonioideae.
4. Genistioideae: subfamily of Papillonioideae; paraphyletic.
5. Mimosoideae: monophyletic.
6. Caesalpinioideae: paraphyletic.
7. Zygophyllaceae, including Krameriaceae; monophyletic. The above Change shows a general aspect of botanical classification: the clades at the extremes, Phase 1 and 7 are often to much subdivided in special families. whereas as the clade in the middle, Phase 3, 4 and 5, are often too much merged into 1 clade.
One can see this phenomenon as the tendency to go to extremes, in the beginning and end of a theme, which leads to more extreme variations of the theme of the order, or family. The middle is more fused into the general theme.
